What is a C1 Licence?

A C1 licence allows you to drive vehicles weighing between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes. This sits between a standard car licence (Category B) and a full HGV Class 2 licence (Category C). The C1 is perfect for drivers who need to operate larger vehicles but don't require a full HGV qualification.

If you passed your car driving test before 1 January 1997, you may already have C1 entitlement on your licence. Check your photocard to see if 'C1' appears in the categories section.

Who Needs C1 Training?

Ambulance Drivers: The primary requirement for all paramedics and ambulance drivers in the UK. Ambulance services demand C1 qualification for all operational staff.

Horsebox Operators: Anyone transporting horses professionally or semi-professionally needs C1 to legally operate modern horseboxes.

Specialist Vehicle Operators: Drivers of mobile libraries, catering vehicles, mobile shops, and other specialist 3.5-7.5t vehicles.

Commercial Delivery: Some delivery companies require C1 for larger van operations and specialist logistics.

C1 Driver Salary & Job Market

C1 drivers enjoy strong job market demand with competitive salaries:

  • Ambulance Drivers: £24,000–£32,000+ annually (with progression to £40,000+)
  • Specialist Transport: £26,000–£35,000+ annually
  • Commercial Delivery: £22,000–£28,000+ annually
  • Self-Employment: £30,000–£50,000+ annually (horsebox transport, specialist haulage)

The job market for C1 drivers is particularly strong in the ambulance and emergency services sector, where there is consistent demand and excellent job security. Many ambulance trusts offer competitive benefits packages including pension schemes, shift allowances, and career progression opportunities.
