Licence Categories
What is a C1 Licence?
A C1 licence allows you to drive vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg. To get this, you must hold a valid car driving licence and be at least 18 years old.
What is a Category C Licence?
A Category C licence allows you to drive vehicles over 3,500kg with a trailer up to 750kg. You need a car licence, to be over 18, and have a Driver CPC.
What is a C+E Licence?
Often called a Class 1 licence, this allows you to drive a Category C vehicle with a trailer weighing more than 750kg.
Do I need a C1 licence to drive an ambulance?
Yes, most ambulances fall into the C1 category (up to 7.5 tonnes), so a C1 licence is required.
How do I get a 7.5 tonne licence?
To drive a 7.5-tonne vehicle, you need to acquire a Category C1 licence.

How long does HGV training take?
The practical training typically takes about 5 days. The entire process, from medical to qualification, usually takes between 8 and 10 weeks.

CPC & Requirements
What is Driver CPC?
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a required qualification for professional HGV drivers. You must carry your Driver Qualification Card (DQC), or face a £50 penalty.
Can I drive a 7.5t vehicle on my car licence?
Only if you passed your car test before February 1997. However, if you are driving for financial gain, you will still need to complete your Driver CPC.
How do I get a C1 licence?
The process involves getting a provisional entitlement, passing a medical exam, and then passing the theory, hazard perception, CPC module 3a (off-road), and practical driving tests.
Do I need a CPC for a 7.5t vehicle?
Yes, if you are driving the vehicle for commercial purposes or financial gain, the Driver CPC is a legal requirement.

Do I need a medical for a C1 licence?
Yes, a medical examination is required to ensure you are fit to drive a larger vehicle. You will need to have Form D4 completed by a doctor.
