Direct Access to Class 1 (C+E): Can You Skip Class 2?

Direct Access to Class 1: Skip Class 2 and Go Straight to C+E

One of the most significant changes to HGV licensing in recent years is the introduction of direct access to Category C+E (Class 1). Previously, you had to obtain your Category C (Class 2) licence first, then upgrade to C+E. Now, you can go straight to the top — and it could save you time and money.

What Is Direct Access?

Direct access means you can train for and take your Category C+E (Class 1) practical test without first holding a Category C (Class 2) licence. When you pass, you receive both C and C+E entitlements on your licence simultaneously.

This change was introduced by the DVSA to help address the UK driver shortage by reducing the time and cost of getting fully qualified.

What Are the Benefits?

  • Save time: Instead of two separate training courses and two practical tests, you complete everything in one go.
  • Save money: One course fee instead of two. One set of test fees instead of two.
  • Higher earning potential from day one: Class 1 drivers earn significantly more than Class 2 drivers. Starting at C+E means you can access the highest-paying roles immediately.
  • More job opportunities: Many employers specifically seek Class 1 drivers. Having C+E from the start opens more doors.

Is Direct Access Right for You?

Direct access is an excellent option for many people, but it is not for everyone. Consider these factors:

Direct access may be right for you if:

  • You are confident and comfortable learning to drive large vehicles
  • You want to maximise your earning potential from the start
  • You are willing to commit to a slightly longer training course
  • You have good spatial awareness and are comfortable with reversing

The traditional route (C first, then C+E) may be better if:

  • You prefer to build your skills gradually
  • You want to start working sooner with a Class 2 licence while saving for Class 1
  • You are nervous about driving very large vehicles and want to build confidence on rigid lorries first

What Does the Training Involve?

At GS Driver Training, our direct access C+E training course covers:

  • Vehicle familiarisation and safety checks
  • Coupling and uncoupling the trailer
  • Reversing exercises (Module 3a) with an articulated vehicle
  • Road driving on various road types including dual carriageways and rural roads
  • Test route practice around the Guildford DVSA test centre area

The course typically runs for 5–7 days of intensive training, depending on your aptitude and confidence level. Our instructors will assess your progress and ensure you are fully prepared before your test.

How Much Does Direct Access Cost?

Our direct access C+E packages are competitively priced and include all DVSA test fees. Contact us for current pricing — we also offer finance options from £30/month.

When comparing costs, remember that direct access is typically cheaper than taking Class 2 and Class 1 as separate courses, even though the single course is longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still get a Class 2 licence with direct access?

Yes. When you pass the C+E test via direct access, both Category C and Category C+E are added to your licence.

Can I drive a rigid lorry with a C+E licence?

Yes. A C+E licence covers all vehicles that a Category C licence covers, plus articulated lorries.

Is the test harder for direct access?

The test itself is the same whether you take it via direct access or the traditional route. The difference is that you are learning to handle an articulated vehicle without prior experience on a rigid lorry.
